Washington State election reform, isn’t.

My buddy over at Minute of Angle has some recommendations for Secretary of State Sam Reed. The only problem I can see with this is that it may be perceived as making voting hard to do. I’m not really sympathetic to that view, though.

For some reason that I can’t really fathom, it seems appropriate that voting should be inconvenient. The only analogy I can think of at the moment is climbing a mountain. The reward of completion is compounded by the difficulty of the climb.

The act of placing my vote seems so much more important when I do it at the polls. Participating in the process with my neighbors, whether I actually know any of them, or not, is simply more rewarding.

It also doesn’t hurt that I get to maintain physical control of my ballot and ensure it ends up in the box. You won’t find my ballot “in the trunk of a stolen car in the parking lot of the Washington Education Association headquarters in Federal Way.”
