Taking back control, one former Soviet republic at a time

by crankygeek ~ March 24th, 2005. Filed under: Politically Motivated.

As reported on NPR (Elections Prompt Protests in Former Soviet State) and elsewhere (link to Google News search), protesters in the former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan have taken over key cities and on Thursday overran the presidential compound. The president is reported to have resigned and left the country.

Glad to see there are still people in the world who want liberty bad enough to do something about it.

While it’s great to be optimistic, Kyrgyzstan has no tradition of liberty. The country will either fall apart into warring ethnic or religious factions or will be “united” by a forceful authoritarian. Liberty is a long shot there (as elsewhere).
